Ćkin mlá k’ʷu’tĺm’ qees sp’q’n’i (How Raven Brought the Sun)

My first in depth exploration and experimentation with mixed media. This piece combines acrylic paint, watercolor, and alcohol markers to create rich patterns and colors. I created 3d forms using mixed media board cut to a specified shape and cotton fabric. These techniques all come together to create a collaged, storybook feeling to the overall artwork.

kḿańt haʔ yutĺx x̌iyáɬnxʷ (How Raven Brought the Sun) is inspired by Salish stories of Raven; a trickster who also brought the sun to the Earth and thus created life on Earth. I felt drawn to the duality of a tricker and a creator, in association with my mental health journey. kḿańt haʔ yutĺx x̌iyáɬnxʷ (How Raven Brought the Sun) depicts Raven providing me light, but I am unsure of Raven's intentions. This mirrors my journey with depression, always being unsure of what the future holds.
